How to Prepare for Your First Surf Class. Surf is a must-do activity to try when visiting Bali, especially if you seek to chase new adventures and have a long bucket list. In case you are about to surf for the first time, you must have a few questions regarding with how to even prepare for a surf lesson. In order to make all things clear, now we list some useful tips to think of before heading to the beach with a surfboard.
1. Nature has the final say
The most important thing you should expect is that nature cannot be controlled. Even the most professional surfers have to cope with its strength and accept. Wind, rain and other inconvenient circumstances can occur during surfing anytime. According to this, it is crucial to listen to your surf teacher all the time. Follow the instructions and give yourself time to adapt to the challenges of surf.
2. Choose the right equipment
The necessary equipment you need for surfing is wetsuit and a surfboard. While choosing the right ones may seem easy for the first time, there are some aspects you should take into consideration. First of all, select a wetsuit of right thickness according to the water temperature. Get the right size that is tight enough to keep water away from flushing through. Furthermore, pick up a board that fits your size and ability since the wrong piece can just hold you back. In Bali you won’t need a wetsuit. :)
3. Warm up is essential
Just like before every physical activity, warming up is especially essential before surfing. As it moves your whole body – even muscles you have never discovered existing -, it is worth not only to thoroughly warm up but to work out and do cardio for a few days before surfing to prepare your body. A few dynamic movements to open up your hips and shoulders. A little stretching and jogging on the beach and drinking lots of water will be game changers.
4. Watch some instructional videos
There are numerous free instructional videos of surf on the internet. This will help you get prepared about the basics and acquire the most important techniques faster. Seeing the movement on a video will help your body follow your mind and copy them. On the other hand, the aim is not to memorize everything, instead to get familiar with the surf expressions and what happens on the first lesson.
5. Always have a surf buddy with you
Even when you prepare to surf on a calm shore that is suitable for beginners, always have a friend with you who can swim well and can have an eye on you. Moreover, choose a beach with lifeguards and never underestimate the force of ocean – paddle out only when you completely feel sure about its safety.
Surfing is a long, challenging but fun process. Do not feel miserable if the first time is not like you have seen on videos, everyone had to start somewhere and you are better taking care of yourself – safety is always the first. Besides being a great way of fitness, surf also teaches you for discipline, self-love and patience which makes your life joyful and happy in the long run.
