1. Proper breathing technique
The most fundamental thing to learn in BJJ is the proper breathing technique. First of all, it is the key to execute smooth movements and right techniques. Getting your opponents tired is a good strategy, since when their breathing technique collapses, their performance does so. On the other hand, focusing on your breaths helps you clear your mind and eliminate self-doubt and other negative thoughts that could hold your performance back.
2. Shrimping and Bridging
Shrimping and bridging techniques are the most essential movements, the most basic words of the BJJ language. Just like when you learn a language, you first need to study basic words in order to be able to create sentences later. Moreover, shrimping and bridging are the key movements for almost all other BJJ techniques and have several different variations. 3. Gripping properly
Another important thing in BJJ is a strong grip. Your fingers and hands gradually become stronger from training to training but in case you seek to speed up this process, it is worth working specifically on your grip. There are several devices and equipment that are available in most supermarkets but you can also opt for some fun activities to strengthen your grip, like rock climbing for instance. Besides strength, the right gripping technique is also indispensable – to know when, how and which part of your opponent’s body to hold and control.
4. Passing the guard
The first difficult practice of BJJ beginners have to face is the guard pass, since this is the most effective one. The most impressive version of it is the standing guard pass, that is used even at the most advanced levels. Standing up forces your opponent to open up his guard and then you can pin one of your opponent’s legs with your shin as sliding into side control. There are several other ways to get past a person’s guard, but the standing one is the most easily feasible.
As a beginner, the first most complex technique you will learn is armbars.
